If you’re considering orthodontic treatment for yourself or your child, you’ve likely narrowed it down to two options: traditional braces or clear aligners such as Invisalign®.
Both can straighten teeth beautifully. Both can correct bite problems. And in experienced hands, both can deliver equally sophisticated results.
The real difference isn’t “metal versus plastic.” It’s about how each approach fits your lifestyle and the orthodontist’s clinical judgment in designing your treatment.
At Amp Orthodontics & Kids Dental in Clemmons, we use both systems every day. Rather than pushing one method, we recommend the approach that is most predictable, efficient, and comfortable for each individual patient.
Braces have been refined for decades and remain one of the most precise tools in orthodontics. Small brackets are bonded to the teeth and connected with wires that apply a gentle, continuous force to guide teeth and jaws into alignment.
Because braces stay on the teeth, treatment progresses continuously without any extra effort. For patients who don’t want the responsibility of keeping track of trays or hours worn, this built-in consistency can be reassuring.
Braces are often a great choice for:
That said, braces do require a bit more day-to-day care. Cleaning around brackets takes extra time, certain foods need to be avoided, and the hardware is more visible than aligners. Adjustment visits can also cause temporary tenderness as teeth shift.
For many families, these are small trade-offs for a very reliable treatment.
Clear aligners offer a different experience. Instead of brackets and wires, a series of custom trays gently moves the teeth in stages. They’re removable, nearly invisible, and easy to integrate into everyday life.
Adults and teens often appreciate the flexibility! You can take aligners out for meals, brushing, sports, or special events. Appointments are typically less frequent, and in some cases, progress can be monitored with virtual or video check-ins, which is convenient for busy schedules.
What surprises many people is that aligners aren’t always as “minimal” as they seem.
To achieve precise tooth movement, most treatments still involve small tooth-colored attachments (often called buttons) and, sometimes, rubber bands, much like braces. Consistent wear, about 20–22 hours per day, is essential for them to work efficiently.
When worn properly, aligners can treat far more than mild cosmetic concerns. With modern technology and thoughtful planning, they can address many of the same complex alignment and bite issues traditionally treated with braces.
In reality, success depends less on the appliance and more on the orthodontist’s skill and experience in directing the mechanics.
There isn’t a universally “better” option, only the better option for YOU.
Both braces and clear aligners can produce excellent outcomes when treatment is carefully designed and closely monitored. The right choice comes down to your bite, your habits, and your lifestyle preferences.
During your consultation, we’ll walk through the pros and limitations of each approach and recommend what will deliver the healthiest, most stable result; not simply what’s trending.
